Hi,
Recently I have been unable to view attachments in new incoming mail. The
size of the mail is correct for the attached file (eg 1MB), but there is no
'paperclip' shown next to the header in the inbox. Clicking
Properties/Details/Message Source shows that the attachment is embedded in
the email. This is not file specific, as I can see one file type (eg jpg)
from a sender but not another (eg psd), but can see psd files from another
sender. I'm tearing my hair out - any ideas?

Thanks

Windows version?

Anti-virus application?

Tools | Options | Read | Read all messages in plain text <=is this option
enabled?

If the mail was sent from Outlook using Outlook's RTF format then Outlook
Express will never find the attachment. Outlook Express does not understand
Outlook's RTF format. Ask the Outlook user to please use Plain Text,
especially when sending attachments.

XP, SP2; Trend PC-Cillin internet security 2007 (I have reinstalled this to
try to resolve the problem)

The Read all messages in plain text was not enabled - I have enabled it but
the problem remains

I can see the attachments if I send from Outlook Express or my work Outlook
account - The biggest problem are mails from a sender I have had no previous
problems with - I'll check if they've done anything at their end

Also - if I send attachments from my googlemail or yahoo web accounts they
are not visible as attachments, but embedded in the email.

Thanks (so far.....)

I've started to see a similar problem. Using XP Home with SP2. Norton A/V
14.4.0.12. (email scanning now disabled). OE 6.

A sender is trying to send me a PDF attachment. Not certain what mailer
he's using but I think it's Yahoo (not Outlook).

If I view the incoming message source I can see the encoded attachment but
there is no attachment icon showing in the inbox.

I can send a PDF to myself without a problem, the sender says other people
can receive the PDF from him. I have received similar files before from the
same sender without problems.

1. See if disabling Email Scanning by PC-cillin (incoming and outgoing)
resolves the problem. Email scanning provides no additional protection and
even Symantec says it's not necessary:

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

2. If the message was sent using MS Outlook and RichText or HTML format, ask
your correspondent to only use Plain Text when sending to you, especially if
there's an attachment.

Hi,

I have disabled email scanning but the problem remains.

I have tried sending attachments from my googlemail web account, and the
attachment remains not visible, but still embedded in the mail. The same
email sent to my works outlook account shows the attachment as expected.

Interesting to see another user experiencing the same problem - could recent
updates have caused a problem?

Thanks for the advice so far

Does the behavior persist if you send yourself a message with an attachment
using OE and view the received message in OE?

Does the behavior persist with the same mail account(s) running in a new
identity (File | Identities | Add new identity)?

I repeat: If the sender used Outlook"s RTF format then OE will not find the
attachment.
While viewing the message press Ctrl-F3 and search for: ms-tnef
If it is there the message was send with Outlook's RTF format.

I've been struggling with this for a week now - however subsequent posts seem
to have identified the problem and suggested a workaround
(http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?pg=3&cat=en_US_1af493e1-1831-4a23-a891-078634d05944&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress&fltr= )

Armed with this info, I approached my ISP (ntlworld) who deny Cloudmark
exists on their systems. I can see (and download) any attachments from my
ntlworld webmail account, but once they are downloaded via OE they become
corrupted. Are ntlworld fobbing me off ?
