I can no longer send emails from my Windows mail. I have Vista. I tried to
send an email with an attachment but I received an 0x800ccof error message.
I've tried everything to no avail. After reading many of the comments in
this forum, I can narrow the problem down to installing stinky McAfee!!!!
Any security referrals that will be compatible with microsoft? Any that may
be...free? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

You can start by uninstalling the McAfee program. Then run this program
to clean up what the uninstall leaves behind:
You may even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.
If that's enough, it's time to look for a replacement antivirus program.
I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install
that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
If that's not enough, we're likely to need the whole error message,
not just a summary of it, to offer much more help. Also, you might
want to check if you cam either move the oldest message in the
Outbox to the Drafts folder or delete it, then restart Windows Mail. |

Thanks for the quick response. I'll give you the whole message.
You're server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
include server problems, network problem, long period of inactivity. Subject
'nothing', Acct: 'mail.comcast.net', Server 'SMTP.comcast.net',
Protocol:SMTP, Port 25, Secure(SSL), No Error Number 0x800CCOF.
Thanks again.

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before it gets to the server? If so, such
connections
to port 25 are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.
Also, you might check if you followed Comcast's instructions:
A quick look suggests they allow switching to a different port to avoid the
above problem. The instructions were written for Outlook Express, but
should also work under Windows Mail as long as they don't call for the
HTTP protocol. Avoid the One Click Fix.

Have you thoroughly uninstalled McAfee per Robert's instructions?

Robert,
Thanks for the link to comcast. I'm still fairly new to all of this so
FINDING all the info is challenging enough. Anyway, I tried comcast's rec.
and unfortunately is didn't work. I also removed my windows accts, restarted
and set the acct up again...to no avail...sigh...I guess my next move will be
to uninstall McAfee. You rec. uninstalling and then running a program to
clean up what was left behind. Again, being new...if I go on that link will
it walk me through running it? Sorry I sound so naive!!

Look and see. I think it needs for you to know which version of the
McAfee program you want to clean up after.

Robert,
I got it working!!! I figured I would go through everything 1 last time
before I uninstalling McAfee and found that at some point during my fixes the
email scanning option defaulted back to on. I clicked it back off and with
the fixes from the comcast link, the removal and restarting of email accts
etc. etc. It finally worked. Thank you for ALL your help. You are my
computer hero.

Try changing the port for the SMTP server from 25 to 587.
Also make sure that "My server requires authentication" is checked.

It probably won't stay fixed for very long. Even with email scanning
turned off, McAfee tends to corrupt Windows Mail over time.

Gary,
Thank you for your info. Those were some of the fixes that Robert had rec.
as well. I did them ALL!!! Fortunately, the combination of fixes seem to
have solved the problem...for now...I'm sure there will be more to come.
Thanks for the input.
