|
|
I have a number of OE Contact entries that show only as "?? ?????? ????" or
"????" in the OE Contacts *panel*, but that show up in correct "foreign"
(non-English) character set everywhere else in OE. This includes the
displays if I check the individual contact's Properties in the Contacts as
well as To: and From: fields in messages. I checked all resources I could
think to check and I find no source addressing this issue. How do I get OE
to display the contact's "Display" field in the Contacts panel in the same
way ("foreign"/non-English font) as it is shown in the contact's Properties
| Display field?
Thanks,
Caveman
P.S. The ie6.outlook.express newsgroups appear to have no postings -- are
there active OE 6 newsgroups?

(Certain previous news groups have been removed for this reply since PA Bear
was kind enough to point out they were either inappropriate or did not
exist).
Hi PA Bear,
Thanks for your help!
> Windows version? Language version of Windows?
XP Pro 2002 SP1 (OEM: Sony Vaio). Refuses to update to SP2, BTW.
I believe this version of Windows to be standard American English version.
If you can tell me how to confirm I'll be glad to do that.
> What's your current setting in OE View > Encoding?
I tried setting it to Japanese AutoSelect, Japanese Shift-JIS and Japanese
EUC, as well as Western European (Windows). There was no change. BTW,
*this setting seems to affect the Messages Preview panel but not the
Contacts panel nor the Messages List panel.*
> What non-English language are these contacts (e.g., Simplified Chinese)?
I am sure a couple are in Japanese (Kanji); I am guessing the others are
also, but I am not certain of that. The two would be a good start.
*Except* of the Contacts panel, they appear correctly everywhere else in OE.
BTW, I just noticed that sometimes the *subject* of messages in the Message
List panel appears as ???? and sometimes correctly (I am guessing in proper
characters), but I do not understand what controls that, either. When it
appears as ???? then upon opening the message into its own window the
subject appears correctly.
Thanks,
Caveman |

Just checking if anyone had any ideas on how to solve this issue.

If the names show up correctly elswehere in OE but not in the contacts
panel, then it's not a font issue, and there's no fix. When non-Latin
characters appear as question marks, the software is using a rendering
routine that doesn't understand these characters. Since OE is a dead
product, that's unlikely to be repaired.

Refuses to update to SP2, BTW.
IMHO, you should be working on that instead, my friend.
1. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.
**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**
2. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate the suggestions. I am really grateful for the
numerous links you sent!!! That was indeed very kind of you!
The issue with installing SP2 is apparently the OEM / Sony version of Win
XP/SP1 itself. I was warned that upgrading this machine with "normal" SP2
does damage to its sanity, and thus the owner's as well. We were told by MS
that the upgrade was OEM-specific and thus strictly an OEM (i.e., Sony)
issue.
We were told by Sony that Sony would be glad to provide the special SP2
upgrade for apparently $$ or $$$ _or_ if we had warranty service contract on
this machine.
When we first ordered the machine from Sony we had paid for an extended
warranty that would cover this upgrade. Unfortunately, however, the machine
we were sent initially was defective. When we sent it back for an exchange
Sony did not transfer the warranty record to the "new" replacement machine,
the one we have right now. Since we received a brand new and complete set
of paperwork with the replacement machine (that replacement was mess -- at
one point we had a record of buying four or five machines, all but one
fathoms) we chucked the first machine's paperwork, not realizing that the
first order number was required to prove the purchase of the extended
service contract. Hence it seems we merely paid for the contract, not
gotten the service out of it -- including not having the SP2 upgrade. I do
not think I want to spend additional $$$ for SP2 for this machine -- it was
already a very expensive machine and poor ROI. Thus we are in limbo on
that.
As to looking for hijackware, I'll check it thoroughly as you suggested and
drop a note a bit later.
*Any suggestions on the OE's incorrect fonts in the Contact's panel? It has
become an active "issue."*
Thanks,
Caveman

Another reason I never buy anything with "SONY" stamped on it. |

I bit the bullet and updated the machine to SP2. It helped to know the
Consumer Protection agencies addresses... . The tech support eventually
turned out to be helpful... .
However, still no foreign fonts in the Contacts panel. Any ideas?
To what section would I post the HijackThis log for this issue?
Caveman.
