The MVPs and posters of this group have been no end of help to me in trying
to tame OLEXP. I have an off topic problem, and would like a referral to a
group who just talks about Windows 98 problems.
In a nutshell, everything is running very slow. Trying to run Defrag won't
work, trying to run Scandisk won't work, and I can't run LiveUpdate in
Norton. I am terrified I have a bug in the computer, yet it is resisting my
feeble diagnostic attempts. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Boot to safe mode and run defrag from there with nothing else running.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft/public.win98.gen_discussion
Eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

And if you still can't run it in Safe Mode, I would suggest you try
Gary Terhune's recommended maintenance procedures, available at;

Also go to Start | Run and type msconfig and disable all startup items and
then reboot.

Dan, I ran that stupid defrag yesterday from 10 am until way after
midnight - I went to bed. Things running better today, but I haven't tried
to do the Norton update. Am planning to document and hit their support desk
with major time complaint if it doesn't work!
