Hi,

I am in a dispute over the ownership of a website. To this end I have
an email from the seller which says the sale was complete. Is it
possible for an expert to legally verify that an email is from the
person it came from.

I will use any testimony from the expert to proove ownership.

Thanks, Simon

The most reliable way would be if the sender used a digitally signed
message (not a typical signature text). But few people use that. For
information on that see:
https://digitalid.verisign.com/client/help/introSignature.htm

A expert could look at the message headers and track the message back to
the sending ISP and with the ISP's assistance, could verify if the
message came from a particular account.

But there are problems with that. The person you have the dispute with
could claim that you forged the e-mail - either the headers or the
content. In that case, you would need a forensic computer specialist to
examine the sender's computers to see if a copy of the sent mail is
there.
