I'm trying to send a quote from Simply accounting but cannot do so since I've
switched from Outlook express to Windows mail. I get a MAPI compatible
error. What can I do to fix this problem

Like Outlook Express, Windows Mail is a Simple MAPI client, not a Full MAPI
client.
However, it sounds like in your case WinMail man not have all its defaults.
Click Start | Default Programs and make sure Windows Mail has all its
defaults.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I checked my default programs and
everything seems to be as they should. What do you suggest I do now? This
is a new computer system so I haven't upgraded my e-mail program or accounts.
Everything is new so you would think that outlook express would have all
files need included with the new program wouldn't you? This is obviously an
ongoing problem so do they have a repair program or anything?

Vista will not run the Outlook Express program. It has a newer email
program instead, Windows Mail.
To get full MAPI use, you still have to install an extra cost software
package. The Office packages that include Outlook will handle this,
but only the versions 2003 and later are fully Vista compatible.
Outlook 2002 will run under Vista, but with a few problems.

Start | Control Panel | Programs | Default Programs | Associate a file type
or protocol with a program
Scroll down to the bottom and make sure MAILTO points to Windows Mail.

Can you tell me exactly where I need to go to get this extra cost software
package. I can't seem to find what I need.

there is no MAILTO when I went to default programs. I did check to see if
windows mail had all its defaults and the only windows mail in the default
list is Windows Mail (News). Is this the same thing? If it is it does have
all its defaults.

Assuming that you went to "Associate a file type of protocol with a
program", I wonder what third party program is killing this Registry entry
for some people. Copy the part between the lines below and save it as

If your local computer stores don't have it, see of of these places:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/default.aspx
Make sure you choose one that includes Outlook - not all versions do.

In addition to "Windows Mail (News)", Default Programs should
have an entry for just "Windows Mail". Try the following fix:

I'm unable to correct this problem. All my defaults are OK. Will installing
Outlook Express solve this problem? Can you install Outlook express on the
vista system?

I have looked for days for the reason I could not send email from Word and
Explore and could not mailto from websites and then I came across your post.
I downloaded and merged the file, went to default programs and made sure all
three boxes were checked, and now all works fine. Thanks for relieving my
great frustration with this aspect of Vista and Windows Mail!
