I was running Outlook Express, installed Outlook, uninstalled after
realizing its limitations. Using Outlook Express again, but the Welcome
page doesn't show my mail count. Have tried resetting the count to zero in
Registry, as well as followed the MSN help sheet for doing so.

Still cannot get the count to work.

Anyone having this problem on IE 5.5SP2/XP Hme Edition?

See if this information helps fix it.

304148 - Overview of the Mail Notification Display on the Windows XP Welcome
Screen:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304148

Also from Kelly Theriot, MVP:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)

Jim: thanks for the suggestions. After some fiddling, the one profile that
was getting correct "unread msg" counts no longer works. I thought I'd found
multiple UnreadMail folders in the registry in different areas (but still
under Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-UnreadMail), but I cannot
find them again.

I've tried TweakUI repeatedly, but no luck.

I considered uninstalling Outlook Express and reinstalling, but my machine
is an eMachine and the only to reinstall would be to reformat and restall
from ground zero, quite a price to pay for the cutesy "unread mail" count on
the Welcome page.

If you have any other suggestions, I'm willing to try. Thanks for taking
time to respond previously.

Sorry, but those links provide the only choices I'm aware of. I've never
paid any attention to that info anyway since my machines all have the
function disabled by changing the registry:
====================================
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\]
"MessageExpiryDays"=dword:00000000

=====================================
Sorry.
