I must be doing something wrong but don't know what. I want to add a sound
file to an e-mail so I go to Format, background, sound and specify a file.
However it won't even play on my end?? This used to work fine for me. I use
only MIDI files I can't figure out what is wrong. Hope someone can help. I am
running windows XP SP2
Thanks!

If you don't hear the sound while creating the message, your volume settings
are too low.
The volume setting ranges from -10000 to 0 with -10000 being off and 0 being
full volume.
Before you insert the background sound you need to make sure your volume
setting is correct. Double click the speaker icon by the clock. For a MIDI
file it will use the volume control labeled "SW Synth" or something similar.
It may vary depending on your sound card.
You can check your settings by clicking the Source Tab at the bottom of the
Compose Message window and looking for this tag
src="filepath to soundfile"> and setting the volume to zero (0).
If not already there, View | Source Edit - Check it.

Thanks!! Now is there a way that I don't have to continually edit the
source?? It was set on source at -9640 or something so changed it to 0 and
works fine, but I noticed I had to edit source in each email I send .

Double click on the speaker icon in the SysTray. Raise the volume for MIDI
all the way up. Does it stick now?

When you select a message to view (even in the Preview Pane) and it has
a background sound, OE sets the speaker volume to whatever the message
says. When you then create a message with a background sound, OE uses
whatever the speaker volume is currently set to.
So what is likely happening is that you have one or more messages with
the bad volume setting and you are selecting one of those messages
before you create your new message. That's what's shooting you in the
foot. So either get rid of the bad messages, repair them or make sure
that you have a message with a good volume setting that you select for
viewing before you create a new message.
If you want to repair existing messages you can do that, but it's
tedious
- Do a File, Save As to save the message to an *.EML file, or
drag-and-drop the message to Windows folder
- Then edit the file in Notepad or other text editor. Change the
volume setting as desired.
- Save the file.
- With OE5+, you can drag-and-drop the message back to an OE folder.
With OE4, you must double click the saved file from the Windows File
Explorer. It will open in a mail window. You can then select File,
Copy to folder (also works with OE5+).
- You can then delete the original message.

Close OE. Set the speaker volume all the way up. Open the folder with the
MIDI you have been using and play it. Stop the MIDI and check the volume. If
it is not still all the way up, that MIDI is causing the problem.

If you have an old message in your inbox or sent items folder or any
other folder that has a background sound (such as one you previously
created) and you look at the message in Outlook Express, it will set the
volume to whatever that old message had and then use that volume on any
new message that you create.
