All of a sudden, clicking on a url link in an OE email doesn't launch my browser (or open the url in my browser if it's already open) - although my mouse cursor does still turn into a hand when I hover over a url in an OE email.
I don't know whether it's relevant but I recently had to run the Winsock fix(http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/WinSock_XP_Fix/winsockxpfix.html) to fix some corrupt registry problems. It fixed the problem I had of inability to resolve web addresses and host names, but it didn't fix the problem described above.
I'm using Win XP SP2 and OE 6.

I'm cross-posting this because I've just noticed that the group I originally posted to has very little traffic. Apologies for that.

For IE7:
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
Browser: IE /must/ be chosen here if you're running IE7 and want such links
to work.
Hyperlinks do not work in Outlook Express after you upgrade to Internet
Explorer 7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929867
If still no joy, for IE6 & IE7:
From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm
If nothing happens when you click a link:
Open Windows Explorer, or the Control Panel.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to [NONE] URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet
Shortcut) and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.
"Application used to perform this action" should read:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome (Check the path to
iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the double quotes.)
DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:
#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)
#4
WWW_OpenURL
URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.
Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

Why are you posting about an OE6 problem in an OE5-specific newsgroup?

Why are you posting about an OE6 problem in an OE5-specific newsgroup in the
first place?

The newsgroup name said IE5 rather than OE5, and as the IE version didn't seem relevant, I looked no further - until I noticed the low traffic to that group. Anyway I hope you and Bruce between you can help me get to the bottom of how to fix my problem - the standard fix in the kb article doesn't work on my machine, as the "Edit" button is greyed out.

Problem solved, I may have misunderstood Bruce and Robear's posts, but to clarify for anyone else who may also have my specific problem:
Under Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults > Microsoft Windows, next to "Web browser" it did say "Internet Explorer". So I thought that was all I needed to check, but it turns out I was wrong.
Under Custom, where it says "Choose a default web browser", the options were "Use my current web browser", "Internet Explorer", and "Mozilla Firefox". The option that was selected was "Use my current web browser". I tried selecting "Mozilla Firefox" (I imagine selecting IE would probably have worked just as well), and clicking OK, and hey presto, I can now click on OE links and launch my browser. So it seems Windows had got in a tizz about which browser my "current browser" actually was and needed to be reminded.
Might be worth adding this to your FAQs - if one has this problem and one is using more than one browser, the above procedure seems to fix it.
