I keep getting a "patch" from Microsoft? that tells me to
open immediately as ther are viruses
I have not opened it, however. I get about 20- 30 messages
each day!!!
How do I stop it from coming in? I have them go to
the "deleted" folder when they come in but it is really
annoying.
Thanks

Absolute FAKE

It is a virus/worm. Microsoft NEVER send emails to individuals about security
patches.

MS does not and cannot send emails to every windows user to tell them of a
security patch. Any security patch is available only by going to the MS update
site or being part of an MS security newsletter.

From the MS website;

"We occasionally send e-mail to customers to inform them that upgrades are
available. However, the e-mail will only provide links to the download sites --
we will never attach the software itself to the e-mail. The links will always
lead to either our web site or our FTP site, never to a third-party site."

Warn friends to delete any email like this immediately if received.

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/patch.asp

Archived response on how to deal with them;

"Cliff,

I seem to have put a stop to the downloading of most of them by setting up an
email rule to delete, from the server, any email over 100KB in size.

When you've set up the rule click on it,to highlight it,then click on MOVE UP
repeatedly to move it to the top of your list of rules.

Of course this rule will be of no use to you if you normally receive emails of
this sort of size that you actually do want.

To set up the rule I did this.

I clicked on TOOLS/MESSAGE RULES/MAIL/NEW.

Then I clicked on the box,in Section 1,next to WHERE THE MESSAGE SIZE IS MORE
THAN SIZE to select it.

Then I clicked on the underlined SIZE and typed in 100 and clicked OK.

Then I moved to Section 2 and clicked the box next to DELETE IT FROM THE
SERVER,to select that option.

Then I clicked OK then OK,on the next page,to create the rule.

Then I clicked on that rule,to highlight it,then kept on clicking on MOVE UP
until that rule was at the top of all my MESSAGE RULES.

Then I clicked on OK again and that was it all done.

PS.

They - those Evil Scum Of The Earth - seem to cottoned on to this trick and
are now sending out these emails in a smaller size so,if it won't cause you any
problems, you could do,as I've done, and reduce the 100 kb to 60 kb to try and
catch these as well."

Dave,

I seem to have put a stop to the downloading of most of them by setting up an email rule to delete, from the server, any email over 60KB in size.

When you've set up the rule click on it,to highlight it,then click on MOVE UP repeatedly to move it to the top of your list of rules.

Of course this rule will be of no use to you if you normally receive emails of this sort of size that you actually do want.

To set up the rule I did this.

I clicked on TOOLS/MESSAGE RULES/MAIL/NEW.

Then I clicked on the box,in Section 1,next to WHERE THE MESSAGE SIZE IS MORE THAN SIZE to select it.

Then I clicked on the underlined SIZE and typed in 60 and clicked OK.

Then I moved to Section 2 and clicked the box next to DELETE IT FROM THE SERVER,to select that option.

Then I clicked OK then OK,on the next page,to create the rule.

Then I clicked on that rule,to highlight it,then kept on clicking on MOVE UP until that rule was at the top of all my MESSAGE RULES.

Then I clicked on OK again and that was it all done.

If this method doesn't suit you.

Load up Outlook Express and remove,if it's there, the tick against 'When Outlook Express starts, go directly to my Inbox' .

Click on INBOX then right-click an empty bit of the TOOLBAR and click on CUSTOMIZE and find the icon called PREVIEW and double-click it to add it to the TOOLBAR.

When you've done this you can click on the PREVIEW icon to turn on or turn off the PREVIEW PANE.

You can then turn it off, before you go on-line,and let all your emails download then delete any that look 'suspicious' - without them being opened when you click on their headers to highlight them before deleting them - then turn it back on to view the rest of them.

If you're still not sure about any of the 'safe' ones then - with the Preview Pane still turned off - you can right-click the header and then click PROPERTIES/DETAILS/MESSAGE SOURCE and see what the email contains then decide to either delete it or open it.
