what has been corrupted and how can I fix it if I keep getting lots of
"mail delivery failed". (to unknown people) I know someone has gotten
into my contacts but how do I correct that.

Chances are that some spammer has hijacked your address and is specifying it
as the sender address when sending his swill. SInce you are listed as the
sender, the bounces come back to you. There's nothing you can do about it.
